Pull! 2nd Dental spouses hit the range

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. --
Spouses of sailors with 2nd Dental Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force broke the mold in their latest meeting at the McIntyre Shooting Complex here, March 21.
Normally they gather at an indoor setting, where the spouses play games, sit through power points, and enjoy a diverse food spread. This morning, however, brought them together for a more lethal game.
“We had a meeting last August and when we asked the spouses what kind of event they would like to have, they all wanted to shoot,” said Jim Stolarczyk, a Madison, Wis. native and family readiness officer for 2nd Dental Bn.
The battalion doesn’t have Jane Wayne Day like Marine Corps units do, so they never get the chance to fire weapons or get to walk in their husband’s boots for a day.
“I chose [the McIntyre Shooting Complex] for two reasons: they have instructors here that will work with the ladies and help them shoot, and it’s a facility here on base. If they have never used it before now, they know where it is and can shoot whenever they want, said Stolarczyk.”
The spouses were given a 30-minute period of instruction where they learned which eye was their dominant eye, how to aim a shotgun, and proper shoulder placement of the weapon. Once that was over, it was time to hit the range and kill clay.
The spouses fired .20 gauge shotguns at clay disks that were launched from automatic trap throwers. Upon the command “Pull,” a bright orange disk flew into the sky.
After firing for approximately two hours the spouses broke for refreshments and socialized.
“We wanted to do something new and different than what we usually do,” said Becky Ruocco, a Salt Lake City, Utah, native and spouse of U.S. Navy Capt. Peter A. Ruocco, the executive officer of the battalion. “Everyone loves this. We’re all having a great time.”
Some of the spouses also took the complex’s archery range to hone their bow skills.
The battalion is scheduled to hold social events in the coming months to continue building up their network, and they will have another large event in September.
“We need to have continuous events so we can keep the network going,” said Stolarczyk. “Hopefully more spouses will come out next time and then we can keep building on that.”
Concluding the shoot, the spouses received a certificate of participation for partaking in the day’s festivities.
