CAPT Sherry A. Caraveo

Captain Caraveo was born in Montgomery, Alabama. At the age of two she moved with her parents to their native country, Colombia, where she grew up until she was 16. Her current home of record is San Diego, CA. Prior to her commission in the Navy she was enlisted in the US Army, and served two and a half years on active duty and 7 years in the National Guard. During her active duty tour she deployed in support of Operation Desert Storm as a construction equipment repairer. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1998, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude and #1 in her class. She was commissioned into the Navy under the HPSP program on February 2001. She attended University of the Pacific in California where she earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree in 2004 graduating with high honors.


Captain Caraveo's assignments include, a residency program in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at Naval Medical Center San Diego, August 2004. Assistant Dental Officer, 1st Dental Battalion/Naval Dental Center Camp Pendleton, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Branch Dental Clinic, August 2005. During her tour at Miramar, she deployed to Al Asad, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, earned her FMF qualification and was the recipient of the LTJG Weedon E. Osborne Award. Orthodontic DUINS residency training at Loma Linda University, CA, June 2008. Staff Orthodontist and Clinic Director, 3rd Dental Battalion/US Naval Dental Center Okinawa, Branch Dental Clinic Camp Kinser, October 2010. Dental Director, Tricare Area Office Pacific, Okinawa, June 2014, where she was responsible for both the
management of the TRICARE Dental Plan and oversight of the integrated health care delivery system for all Active Duty and Active Duty Family Members within the Pacific AOR. Director of Dental Services, 3rd Dental Battalion/US Naval Dental Center Okinawa, April 2019, where she supervised the daily operations of 11 geographically dispersed dental clinics and led 392 personnel, Active Duty and Civilian, in the delivery of dental care for 54,000 eligible beneficiaries. ​Her personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), Army Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal (two awards), Southwest Asia Service Medal and Kuwait Liberation Medal. Captain Caraveo is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists.
