Sergeant Major Julian M. Lumm

Sergeant Major Lumm was born on 26 January 1977 in Tucson, Arizona. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 1996. Immediately after completing Recruit Training, MCRD San Diego, he attended the School of Infantry, Camp Pendleton, California.

As a student at SOI, Private First Class Lumm was screened for duty as a Marcher at Marine Barracks. Upon graduating SOI and receiving the military occupational specialty of 0311, he received orders to Marine Barracks Washington D.C.. After completing Ceremonial Drill School PFC Lumm was selected to attend Silent Drill School and subsequently assigned as a member of the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon. From August 1996 to November 1998 he achieved the billets of Ceremonial Marcher and Fire Team Leader. After completing the required two years on station he received orders to Twenty-Nine Palms, California.

Lance Corporal Lumm was assigned to 3d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Twenty-Nine Palms, California. Once joined to 3d LAR, he completed two deployments; to Okinawa, Japan. During his second deployment to Okinawa Sergeant Lumm was assigned to the Jungle Warfare Training Center, Camp Gonzales as an instructor. He achieved the billets of Fire Team Leader, Squad Leader, and Company Scout Leader from February 1999 to June 2002. Upon attaining the rank of Sergeant, he requested orders to Drill Instructor Duty. He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal as a JWTC Instructor.

In July 2002, Sergeant Lumm reported to Drill Instructor School, Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon completion of DI School, he reported to 1st Battalion, Company B for duty as a Drill Instructor. July 2003, Sergeant Lumm received orders to 3d Battalion 6th Marines.

Sergeant Lumm reported to 3d Battalion 6th Marines, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. From August 2003 to January 2005 he achieved the billets of Squad Leader and Platoon Sergeant. During this time Sergeant Lumm completed two deployments; to Afghanistan. While the battalion was on post deployment leave, Lumm volunteered to cross-deck to 1st Battalion 6th Marines to deploy to Iraq.

In January 2005, Sergeant Lumm reported to 1st Battalion 6th Marines. While assigned to 1/6 he completed three deployments; two to Iraq and with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit to Afghanistan. He achieved the billets of squad leader, platoon sergeant, and company gunnery sergeant from January 2005 to March 2009. Upon Gunnery Sergeant Lumm’s return from Afghanistan he requested orders to Recruiting Duty. He was combat meritoriously promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant while deployed to Afghanistan. Gunnery Sergeant Lumm was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with combat distinguishing device for each deployment to Iraq and Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with combat distinguishing device for Afghanistan.

Gunnery Sergeant Lumm reported to Recruiting School, MCRD San Diego, California in March 2009. Upon completion, he was assigned to Recruiting Station Sacramento, Recruiting Substation Roseville, California as a Canvassing Recruiter. After completing a year, Gunnery Sergeant Lumm was assigned to Recruiting Substation Elk Grove, California as a staff-non-commissioned-officer-in-charge. He achieved the billets of Canvassing Recruiter and Staff Non-Commissioned Officer-in-Charge from June 2009 to May 2012. Gunnery Sergeant Lumm was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.

Upon completion of Recruiting Duty, Gunnery Sergeant Lumm received orders to 1st Battalion 9th Marines, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. While assigned to 1/9 he completed a deployment to Afghanistan. From May 2012 to July 2014 he achieved the billets of Weapons Platoon Sergeant, Company Gunnery Sergeant, and Company First Sergeant. First Sergeant Lumm was awarded the Bronze Star.

First Sergeant Lumm was assigned to Marine Barracks Washington, D.C. as a Company First Sergeant for a marching company from July 2014 to February 2017. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.

Sergeant Major Lumm has been assigned to Marine Corps Recruiting Station Frederick Maryland as the Recruiting Station Sergeant Major.
