Command Master Chief, 2nd Dental Battalion

Master Chief Wunstell is a native of Houma, LA. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the Navy and reported to recruit training in Aug 1988 in San Diego, California, afterwards, he attended DT “A” school in San Diego, CA.

His assignments include Naval Dental Center, Pearl Harbor, HI, - assigned to Bulk Fuel, 3rd BSSG, Ford Island, HI for 2 years (1989-1992); Branch Dental Clinic, Belle Chasse, New Orleans, LA – LPO (1992-1995); Field Medical Service School at Marine Corps Base, Camp Johnson, NC - transferred to 2nd Dental Battalion, 2nd FSSG, Camp Lejeune, NC to Head Quarter and Service Company and 2nd Dental Company (1995-1999); Medical Department Administration Technician “C” School – NSDAT ( 1999-1999); Branch Dental Clinic, Kingsville TX - LPO of Ingleside and Kingsville Branch Dental Clinic’s for 2 years, the first enlisted staff member to win the BUMED Better Business Practice Award and led the launch of the DENCAS program to operational forces(1999-2002); USS Kearsarge (LHD-3) –reported as LCPO of Dental Department and transfer as Departmental Leading Chief Petty Officer for Medical Dept (2002-2004); United States Fleet Forces Command - Code FFC-NO2D, the active voice for “HM” and “DT” merger for the Fleet, revamped the Ship Equipment Replacement Program for every fleet and ship in the Navy(2004-2006); After 5 interviews and 3 Master Chief Boards he was selected as the first DT to go to Division at 2nd Marine Division, II MEF, Camp Lejeune, NC. Arrived 26 November 2006 to 8th Marine Regiment and 23 December 2006 was selected as Remind Behind Leader (RBL) for 2nd Marine Division with 13 infantry battalions and 4 support Battalions with 853 Sailors under his charge. He increased life saving training and decreased the time for medical procedures for deploying unit and establishes MED-BOLT for II MEF. He was then selected for 26th MEU SEL at II MEF, Camp Lejeune, NC completed a successful deployment. (2006-2009)

Master Chief Wunstell assumed duties as SEL of Directorate of Medical Services, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA . He was also the Command Managed Equal Opportunity for a staff of over 7,000 at Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, VA. He was then selected as the SEL of Naval Station Norfolk Branch Health Clinic merging the dental and medical clinics into the Largest Naval Health Clinic. He was then selected as the SEL of Directorate of Primary Care and Branch Clinics. The largest directorate in Navy Medicine, he increased enrollment by 16,000 and established 13 Medical Home Ports teams with accreditation. (2009-2015). Master Chief Wunstell’s reported to 2nd Dental BN/ Naval Dental Center, Camp Lejeune as Command Master Chief, 14 October, 2015.

Master Chief Wunstell’s personal awards include two Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals (5th Award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals (2nd Award) and various campaign and service awards. He has earned an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts at Campbell University and has completed 16 courses, towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Workforce Education at Southern Illinois University.
