U.S. Marines teamed up with students at Parkwood Elementary School for a Commander’s Cup on Onslow Beach, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, May 24, 2019.

The cup was organized by Marines with 2nd Transportation Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group who adopted the school Jan. 20, 2019 and visit the students every Tuesday.

“Seeing the [Marines and Sailors] give back and invest in the community is wonderful,” said Lt Col. Jonathan Baker, commanding officer of the unit. “These children are our future and it’s our job to foster their creativity.”

The commander’s cup serves as another way to extend that partnership and shows the students how Marines overcome challenges through teamwork.

“As Marines, we all want to be better, faster and stronger,” said Lance Cpl. Carlos Salazar, a motor transport operator with the unit. “It fills me with a sense of pride that we’re able to inspire these students.”

Events at the cup consisted of a push-up competition, Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) tournament, log run, tug-of-war and more.

Although the Marines were the primary competitors, the students motivated them by cheering and joining in on some of the challenges.

One of the six functional areas of leadership development in the Marine Corps is family. The school liaison program falls into the family component and is a resource Marines can use to strengthen their involvement in the community.

“I have siblings, so I’ve always been invested in helping them grow into good people,” said Salazar. “I see the students as my own family and it makes me want to try harder every day for them.”
