CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- Marines are known for conducting ‘police calls’ (picking up trash) around their living and working areas every week, but Earth Day has inspired Marines aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C., to expand their police calls across the base into areas they don’t normally go.
Combat Logistics Regiment 25, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, kicked off their Earth Day observance by picking up trash on the lawns, streets and in the woods throughout the French Creek area of the base. (French Creek is one of 10 main areas that make up Camp Lejeune.)
Other units in the 2nd MLG will continue to police call throughout the week, including CLR-27, CLR-2, and 8th Engineer Support Battalion, helping to decrease the amount of trash that has accumulated within the past few months.
“It’s our job to set the example for the community,” said Staff Sgt. Travis Ronzio, the regimental information assurance manager, CLR-25. “When people see how the base is a lot cleaner than out in town, we’re setting an example of how to live.”
He went on to say it’s just a matter of everyone doing their part - cleaning up after themselves and contributing to the massive police call this week.
Cpl. Caleb Thomason, a data network specialist with CLR-25, said this was the biggest police call he’s ever been a part of.
“It’s definitely going to be a lot cleaner when we’re done,” he said.
Once the garbage was collected, Marines sorted out the recyclable items in order to take them to the base recycling center. They also sorted out wood and metal items in order to dispose of them at designated sites aboard the base.
CLR-25 started off the week on a great green foot, with many Marines picking up trash and doing their share. With more 2nd MLG Marines to follow suit in the upcoming days, their efforts are helping to uphold this year’s Marine Corps’ Earth Day theme of “preserving our force, protecting our future.”
