As we approach hurricane season, it's important to be prepared well in advance. The official hurricane season for our area runs from June 1 to November 30.

To ensure safety, it's crucial to have a well-thought-out evacuation plan. Identify potential evacuation destinations and multiple routes to get there. Don't forget to consider the needs of your pets in your plan.

Stock up on disaster supplies such as non-perishable food, water, medicine, and emergency essentials. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least three days. Don't forget to make provisions for your pets as well.

Review your insurance coverage and ensure you have adequate protection for your home and belongings. Remember that standard home and renters’ insurance policies do not cover flooding, so consider purchasing a separate flood insurance policy.

Create a communication plan for your family and share it with everyone. Establish meeting points and compile a list of emergency contacts. Also, consider having an out-of-town contact in case of evacuation.

Take steps to strengthen your home against potential hurricane impacts. This may include trimming trees, installing storm shutters, and reinforcing vulnerable areas of your home. If you are renting, discuss storm preparedness with your landlord.
