Lieutenant Colonel Steven D. Kasdan is a native of California and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 2010 after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science Degree in History. Prior to attending The Basic School, Lieutenant Colonel Kasdan was selected for the Voluntary Graduate Education Program at the University of Maryland, College Park where in 2011 he earned a Master of Arts Degree in Government and Politics.

Sergeant Major Spurling is a native of Maryland. He enlisted in the Navy in March of 2002 and reported to Great Lakes, Chicago Illinois for basic training. Upon completion of basic training, he attended Master-at-arms A school at Lackland Air force Base, San Antonio, TX. In October of 2002, he was assigned shore duty in Chinhae, Korea where he served as a Master-at- Arms for the installation. In October 2003 he was transferred to Sewells Point Police Precinct in Norfolk, VA. While in Norfolk, he served as a Patrolman, Seaward Sentry, Chief of the Guard, and Harbor Security Patrol. In May 2006, he got out of the Navy to pursue his education.
