Although they spend a lot of time together, Marines and their spouses are seldom exposed to each other’s individual lifestyles, such as work or maintaining a household with children.

The 2nd Marine Logistics Group bridged the gap with a Senior Leaders’ Spouse Orientation at the Officers’ Club aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C., Oct. 6, 2011.

“This is our second time doing this orientation and it’s been excellent thus far,” said Lt. Col. Dan Howard, officer-in-charge of operations with 2nd MLG. “We wanted to give them a tour of our facilities and a better understanding of the things we do as a unit.”

The day included a period of military education, where spouses received a brief description of the leadership and different sections throughout the 2nd MLG, from the commanding general and sergeant major to the regiments and companies.

Everyone in attendance also enjoyed food and refreshments for lunch, followed by a tour of 2nd MLG facilities including 2nd Maintenance Battalion facilities, Landing Support Company and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company.

The orientation has been successful thus far, Howard expressed. When asked what could be added, at the moment, there weren’t any serious additions wanted to be added in the day’s activities, he said.

“I would love for more spouses to show up,” Howard said. “This was a good turnout, but the more people we have coming to this event, the more we can spread the word and knowledge of what we’re doing as a unit and what their spouses are doing as well.”

With the success of the orientation, the future will bring more chances for spouses to attend other orientations and learn more about the unit their service member serves on a daily basis.
