Alcohol is the most commonly abused substance among Marines. Robert M. Peebles, department head of the Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program, said SARP screened over 1,400 alcohol related cases compared to roughly 500 drug related cases last year. Going out with the intention of only drinking a small amount and ending up drunk, or altering one’s lifestyle and habits to incorporate drinking are signs of an emerging dependence on alcohol, he explained.
