Executive Officer, 2nd Dental Battalion
Captain Walter B. Volinski Jr.

A native of Swoyersville, Pennsylvania, Captain Volinski received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Wilkes University in 1997 and his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from Temple University School of Dentistry in 2002. Following seven years of private practice in northeast Pennsylvania, he was commissioned as a Naval Officer in 2009.

He reported to 2d Dental Battalion, Camp Lejeune in 2009 where he served as Officer in Charge of Building 65 Dental Annex. In 2011 he deployed with a dental detachment as part of 2d Marine Logistics Group to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. While there, he served as Clinic Director for Forward Operating Base Delram II providing dental support to US and coalition forces.

In 2016, he completed a two-year residency at Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda where he earned his certificate in Comprehensive Dentistry and a Master of Science degree in Oral Biology. He subsequently earned the prestigious status as a Diplomate of the American Board of General Dentistry. Following residency, he reported aboard the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) where he served as Assistant Dental Department Head. During this operational tour, he was deployed to Fifth and Seventh Fleets with Carrier Strike Group 11 supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In 2018, he accepted orders to Naval Hospital Bremerton where he was selected to serve as the command’s Senior Dental Executive. During this tour he provided leadership and oversight to four geographically dispersed dental clinics and reported directly to the Commanding Officer as a special advisor on all dental matters.

Captain Volinski reported in 2021 as Officer-in-Charge, 11th Dental Company Detachment, Iwakuni, Japan leading the dental care mission for US service members and family stationed aboard Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni. He is currently serving as Executive Officer, 2d Dental Battalion, Camp Lejeune. Over the course of his operational tours, Captain Volinski earned his Fleet Marine Force Officer and Surface Warfare Medical Officer Qualifications. His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards).
