Lance Cpl. Matthew Kirkman, a radio technician with 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, is the newest member of the 2nd MLG Color Guard and serves as a rifle bearer. Kirkman jumped at the opportunity to become a member of the team, because it allows him to represent the Marine Corps in ceremonies and parades up and down the eastern seaboard. Michael Tomlinson, from Keene, Texas, the chaplain for 2nd Marine Logistics Group (Forward), gave the invocation during a cake cutting ceremony in commemoration of the 113th birthday of the hospital corps aboard Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan, June 17, 2011. More than 150 service members and civilians celebrated the birthday with a 5 km run at 6 a.m. and then in the afternoon with a ceremony and cake. ::r::::n::::r::::n::::r::::n:: - Lt. Cmdr. Monson, from Blackfoot, Idaho, an automated maintenance technician with 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group (Forward), uses a gas torch to cut off the rails of a bridge in the Gamsir district, Helmand province, Afghanistan, June 16, 2011. The Marines placed a bridge over the Darvishan Bridge as a temporary fix to allow Afghan contractors to repair it without stopping traffic in the area. This project will directly benefit the Marines of 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division (Fwd.) who are currently operating in the district in support of the International Security Assistance Force as well as the local population. - Cpl.
