Sergeant Major Curren was born in Washington and enlisted in the Marine Corps in July 2005. Upon completion of recruit training and his MOS school, he was assigned to Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2 in Cherry Point, NC. During this time, he served as an individual augment to 2d Battalion, 3d Marine Regiment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. From September 2005 until March 2006, he served as an Intelligence Analyst at both the Battalion and the Company level in Haditha and Haqlaniyah, Iraq.
In April 2007, Sergeant Major Curren was assigned as the Intelligence Chief for Marine Attack Squadron 223. In this role, he embarked on the Royal Navy’s light aircraft carrier, the HMS Illustrious, as part of a unique bilateral training event. Later, Sergeant Major deployed with the squadron in support of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit to Okinawa, Japan. In 2009, he transferred to Marine Aircraft Group 14 as the Security Chief until July of 2010 when he was transfered to Marine Attack Squadron 311 in Yuma, AZ. While serving as the Intelligence Chief, he again deployed in support of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.
In January 2013, Sergeant Major Curren completed Drill Instructor School at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island. He was assigned to Charlie Company, First Recruit Training Battalion, where he successfully served the next three years as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, Chief Drill Instructor, and a Martial Arts Instructor.
In May 2016, Sergeant Major Curren was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 3d Marine Division and served as the Plans Chief for the Division Intelligence section. In this role, he assisted in the planning of numerous combined and joint training exercises that supported real-world contingency operations throughout the Indo-Pacific Command area of responsibility.
In May 2017, Sergeant Major Curren was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 2d Marine Division and served as the Production and Analysis SNCOIC. In November 2017, he transfered to 3d Battalion, 2d Marine Regiment as the Battalion Intelligence Chief and deployed on a Unit Deployment Program to Okinawa, Japan. On deployment, he was additionally selected to fill the position as the Headquarters and Service Company Gunnery Sergeant for the remainder of his assignment.
In June 2019, Sergeant Major Curren was assigned as the Assistant Marine Officer Instructor at the University of Notre Dame's Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program. During his tenure, he coordinated with university staff for all ceremonial events and worked closely with both the Army and Air Force programs. During the summer of 2019, he also served as a Sergeant Instructor at the Officer Candidates School in Quantico, VA.
In August 2020, Sergeant Major Curren was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, as the Unit Senior Enlisted Leader for Company A. In this role, he supported the Southwest Border Mission and deployed as part of the Battalion Landing Team during the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit 22.1 Patrol. Upon his return from deployment in June 2022, Sergeant Major Curren was assigned as the Unit Senior Enlisted Leader for Company K, Marine Combat Training Battalion, School of Infantry (West).
In January 2024, Sergeant Major Curren was assigned as the Unit Senior Enlisted Leader for Headquarters Company, 2d Combat Readiness Regiment until he was selected for the rank of Sergeant Major.
Sergeant Major Curren’s personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four gold stars) and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four gold stars).
